Sunday Sept 8th London

 We decided to visit the Churchill War rooms today. We figured out the tube (the underground) and traveled to the Westminster area. Met some folks from Ohio while standing in line waiting for our entry time. One of the gentlemen served at Kodiak in the navy. He and Dennis had a great "military in Alaska" chat. The War rooms and museum were great. The war museum was almost overwhelming with the amount of information displayed

Afterwards we walked around the Parliment square garden adding photos of Big Bend, Westminster Cathedral,Westminster Bridge, the Parliment building and ALL the tourists. The clouds had cleared and it was beautiful.  (Last nights forecast for today had been up to 75% chance of rain!) We sat at the park and then strolled up Whitehall street up to Trafalgar square. Then a wonderful lunch at Horse and Guardsmen . On Sundays many places have a Sunday " roast" dinner. We split a half of chicken with veggies and yorkshire pudding. As we left, a downpour had taken place. The roads were flowing with rain.  Everyone was huddled under door jams and under umbrellas.  It cleared up within 10 minutes.

Another underground trip to the St Paul's Cathedral. We attended an organ concert in the late afternoon. While waiting for the concert, we had some extra time to step over the Millenium foot bridge and snatch a couple of pictures of the Globe theatre. (Been there, done that, now






On our walk home we passed a piece of history. This is a remnant of Christ's Hospital from WWII


Rested a bit and had a wonderful light dinner at an Italian place a couple of blocks away.

Monday Sept 9th London

 Today's adventure was the Tower of London.  We started a bit early on the tube so we could grab a coffee prior to our entrance at 10. We joined the mass of bodies and entered the courtyard. Last night we watched a YouTube on the Tower. It was very informative and helped us grasp the history and the many renditions it has gone through. On Rick Steve's recommendation we went straight to the Crown Jewels building. Good call. Well done presentation of an amazing collection. We weren't allowed any photography inside this building. One display was for the party plates for a coronation party. A bit of a step up from paper or plastic; Solid gold, one which was a punch bowl for wine which holds 240 bottles of wine.  Took a little coffee break and chatted with a lady from Georgia. Then back out to the courtyard where we stopped in the Fusilier (kind of like our cavalry) museum and walked some of the grounds. Took a walk through the medieval museum.  Again, a  wonderful p...

Pretrip practice

 Hello my friends and family. This is just a practice "run" of posting on our Britain blog. I always have to relearn the steps.  So.... we leave on Monday Aug 19th mid morning flying thru Seattle and then straight to London. We arrive Tues morning around 9:50 am London time (which is 8 hrs ahead -or about 1AM our time) A rough itinerary  London Edinburgh  Inverness Edinburgh  York Keswick ( Lake district of England) Shrewsbury Swansea ( Wales) and on to Cardiff Bath Wareham ("Jurassic Coast - south west coast) Oxford Cotswold Oxford London If you only see this page, there should be links somewhere on the page to get you to the other postings
