Thurs Aug 22

This was our " see the sights day".  The day started with a wonderful breakfast at our hotel followed by starting our walk on the Royal Mile using Rick Steeves audio walk. We stopped the walk to attend our tour at the Edinburgh Castle and the military museum. Wonderful time. WINDY but clear and no rain. Beautiful views.

Then returning on our walk, we made a coffee stop with a toastie - like a toasted cheese sandwich- at a little Cafe. (The only thing out of place was the country music in the background.)  By the way where did the crowds come from between 9 and 11? Quiet when we began and then.....people everywhere! We continued on the walk stopping at St Giles Cathedral and on down the road to the Holyrood castle. There were festivals EVERYWHERE. Shows, music, buskers.

                                                                   Holyrood Castle

Another coffee break and now over to New Town area which is north of the Royal mile. Again another Rick Steeves walk through New Town.

Scott Monument (Sir Walter Scott) in the Princes Garden

                                                                 St Andrew's Square

Back to the hotel for a rest. (We figured we walked about 4 plus miles)

Tonight was dinner at a pub. Great Steak  and Ale pie ( Denise) and Haggis, Neeps & Tatties (Dennis). Later tonight we are attending the Military Tattoo.

The tattoo was wonderful. My favorite was the actual pipe and drum groups plus the military drum and bugle bands. They had some other entertainment between the bands which were good, but oh the pipes! I roughly counted. When the groups were combined, there was about 120 pipes plus 5 or 6 rows of drums. We were concerned about possible rain. We got there early and there was about 10 minutes of misty rain. It stopped and never came back. Whoo hooo

Sunday Sept 8th London

We decided to visit the Churchill War rooms today. We figured out the tube (the underground) and traveled to the Westminster area. Met some folks from Ohio while standing in line waiting for our entry time. One of the gentlemen served at Kodiak in the navy. He and Dennis had a great "military in Alaska" chat. The War rooms and museum were great. The war museum was almost overwhelming with the amount of information displayed                                            Clementine Churchill's room underground  Afterwards we walked around the Parliment square garden adding photos of Big Bend, Westminster Cathedral,Westminster Bridge, the Parliment building and ALL the tourists. The clouds had cleared and it was beautiful.  (Last nights forecast for today had been up to 75% chance of rain!) We sat at the park and then strolled up Whitehall street up to Trafalgar square...

Friday September 6th. The Cotswolds

Today we booked a tour of the Cotswolds. Cot inferring small and wolds connected to the sheep trade. The area is full of rolling green hills with villages and small towns nestled among the hills. The entire area is home to only about 170,000 people. Thats about one person per 2 sheep in the region. The first village we visited, Snowshill, had a population of 184.  It had a church, a pub and a telephone.  (Joke from our driver Steve). In order not to bore you with little details here is an overview. Several of the other towns would have more like 3000 to 5000 population. We visited Chipping Campden, Bourton on the Water, Stow on the Wold, Bibury and started at Moreton in Marsh. We drove through Dover's hill, Broadway, Great Barrington, Ablington, Winson Village and Coln St. Dennis.                                     Old original market in Chipping Campden A majority of villages hav...
